What's New at the APA
- The 2024 Awardees of the Moore Equity in Mental Health Community Grants Program were announced, with a total of $100,000 disbursed among community organizations whose programs and services have worked to improve the mental health of young people of color. You can read more about the grantees and the Moore Equity in Mental Health initiative here.
- APA Publishing authors won a creative scholarship award for an anthology on racism and mental health from the Society for the Study of Psychiatry and Culture. Authors Donna Norris, M.D. and Annelle Primm, M.D., M.P.H. were awarded the 2024 Creative Scholarship Award for the publications of "Mental Health, Racism, and Contemporary Challenges of Being Black in America." - More than 40% of employees are impacted by burnout, according to the latest Healthy Minds Monthly poll from APA and Morning Consult. Around 2/3 of those surveyed (67%) said they knew how to access mental health services through their employer. Two-in-five employed adults said they worry about retaliation or being fired if they take time off for mental health (44%) or seek mental health care (39%). June Course of the Month – "No One Leaves Home Unless Home Is the Mouth of a Shark": Collaborating to Advance the Emotional Health of LGBTQ Individuals in Crisis Zones
This course will describe some of the specific challenges and mental health consequences faced by LGBTQ refugees from around the globe, including examples, and underline the profound mental health needs of this population. The course will present ways in which psychiatrists can engage in assisting these most vulnerable individuals wherever they are in the world by working remotely to provide assessment, treatment, training, and supervision. The UN document known as the Istanbul Protocol-22 with its new LGBTIQ section will also be introduced, as well as how to access remote training. The speakers will also share the challenges and successes of starting an online program aimed at providing emotional support and psychoeducation to LGBTQ refugees. Psychiatric News Seeks Contributions From Members
New Editor in Chief Adrian Preda, M.D., invites APA members to become involved in Psychiatric News by writing news or opinion articles on the topic of their choice or by applying for leadership positions to invite and curate articles from other members in new sections that include the areas of technology, sex and gender issues, advocacy, psychotherapy, integrated psychiatry and primary care, and consultation-liaison psychiatry. Looking Beyond Series To Focus on Maternal Mental Health
APA's online lecture series devoted to health equity is turning its attention to maternal mental health and health disparities. The first webinar, Honoring Traditions: Integrating Cultural Humility Into Mental Health Care for American Indian & Alaska Native Birthing Persons, will be held on Thursday, June 20, from 7-8 p.m. ET. Run, Walk, or Roll at the MOORE Equity 5K
The Fourth Annual APA MOORE Equity in Mental Health 5k will be held in person in Maryland and virtually across the country on Saturday, July 20. Participation will help bring more awareness to mental health inequities facing young people of color and honor mental health equity advocate Bebe Moore Campbell. Registration is free. Be a Part of APA's Speakers Bureau
APA is seeking members who are active and engaged in Component activities to be a part of APA's Speaker's Bureau. The Speaker's Bureau is aimed at diversifying and broadening APA's bench of public-facing experts. In addition to traditional media requests, APA has a number of other opportunities available for members who are willing to share their expertise. This includes writing blogs on important mental health topics, providing government testimony, and participation in social media events, like Twitter/X chats, Instagram live, and more.
Members of the APA Speaker's Bureau, as an internal influencer group, will also be asked to amplify APA's voice by promoting public education initiatives via social media and engaging during APA social media events.
